10 smart (and actually easy) ways to save money on RV gas this summer

Planning an RV trip this summer but side-eyeing gas prices? You’re not alone.

The good news is you don’t have to put your travel plans on hold. A few simple adjustments can make a noticeable difference in how much you spend at the pump without taking away from your time on the road.

Here are 10 smart ways to save money on gas and keep your RV rolling.

1. Leave some items at home
It’s easy to overpack for an RV trip, but all that extra weight adds up quickly when it comes to fuel use. Before you hit the road, take a moment to take stock and be realistic about your plans. Empty unused water tanks and leave behind any gear you most likely won’t use.

2. Don’t be under (tire) pressure
Underinflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency by 2–3%, sometimes even more. Making it a habit to check your tire pressure before each travel day, including trailer tires, can keep your trip running more smoothly and less costly.

3. Slow down
Driving faster might feel like you’re saving time, but it often ends up costing you more in gas. Most RVs perform best in the 55–65 mph range. Simply easing off the speed can lead to noticeable savings over long distances, especially on highway drives.

4. Put it on cruise control
On long, flat stretches of road, cruise control can help maintain a steady speed and prevent the constant acceleration that burns extra fuel. It’s an easy way to improve efficiency without much effort. Just be sure to turn it off when driving through hills or in poor weather conditions.

5. Plan it out
Not all routes are created equal, and a little planning can go a long way. Choose roads with fewer steep climbs and combine errands into fewer stops. Tools like Google Maps or RV-specific apps like RV Life can help you find more efficient routes before you even leave.

6. Avoid the idle
It might not seem like a big deal, but idling can burn up to a gallon of fuel per hour. Whether you’re waiting at a stop or parked for a break, turn off the engine when you can to save fuel.

7. Maintain the basics
Simple things like replacing air filters, using the correct oil and making sure your brakes and components are functioning properly can contribute to better RV performance and lower fuel consumption.

8. Don’t be a drag
RVs aren’t exactly built for aerodynamics, but small adjustments can still help. Secure loose panels, remove unused roof gear and keep windows closed while driving on the highway to reduce drag just enough to make a difference.

9. Gas up your apps
Apps like GasBuddy can help you find better fuel prices but be strategic. A short detour to save a few cents per gallon can be worth it, but going too far out of your way may end up costing more in the long run.

10. Stay a while
One of the smartest ways to make the most of your journey is to slow down and stay a while. Choosing destinations where you can spend more time means fewer travel days, lower fuel costs, and more opportunities to truly experience each stop with family and friends.
