Iowa Cornbelt Campers
Local Chapter
By Jo Overton
September: The ICBC held our September campout at Spencer, IA so we could attend the Clay County Fair. Four units were in attendance (with two members driving in for the day) and we stayed at the City Campground and Park which offers a shuttle to the fairgrounds. The Clay County Fair is one of the largest in IA offering a large midway for rides, food vendors with just about anything on a stick, livestock competitions, many static displays with RVs, boats, and farm machinery, scores of buildings with varied industries, many free shows, and top entertainers at the grandstand shows.
A great time was had by all of us. Sunday we said our goodbyes and left for home.
October: In October our club met at Twin Lakes Christian Center Campground near Rockwell City; six units were in attendance. Friday was sunny and warm which gave us a great background for a laid back day. On Saturday we traveled to Lake City to visit a pipe organ business. Our private tour was very informative and we were amazed at what all goes into designing, making, and installing a pipe organ. The organ we were shown has taken two years and two million dollars to complete. The company is currently installing the pipe organ in an AL church.
After our tour, we went down the street to the Coyote Grill for lunch which we found is owned by the local police chief—must remember to be on our best behavior! Returning to the campground we toured a round barn located on the grounds. The building has been restored and is used for meetings, weddings, and other such events. We also watched an air driven pumpkin cannon being fired. Who knew you could shoot a pumpkin four-hundred to six-hundred yards. After a busy day, we settled down that evening to a large campfire and entertaining conversation. Sunday our hosts made a great breakfast for us before we left for home. |
